Commentary on "The Second Generation: Admonitions"
Day 7: Friday, December 18, 2009
The final lesson for the week refers to an important passage from 1st Corinthians. 1 Cor. 10:11 says:
Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
It is important to note here that these examples were not for the “second generation” of Israelites after wandering in the wilderness. They were “written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.” We have been in the end of the age since the time of the Apostles. This instruction is for us today. Now that Christ has come, we have the fullness of the teaching of the Gospel message that was hidden for ages past.
The lessons of ancient Israel are for the Christian Church today. We benefit greatly from these stories, but in every case, we must go to the New Testament to determine the full meaning for the people of God. Do not be satisfied with the Old Testament alone. In doing so, one is simply performing the religion of the Jew. We must always interpret the Old Testament in light of the complete revelation of God’s will in Jesus Christ, as taught by the Apostles in the New Testament.
