Commentary on "The Fruit of the Spirit is Righteousness"

GRACE CARLSON

Day 4: Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Overview

Tuesday’s lesson focuses on Christ as our righteousness. The lesson discusses Romans 5:17-19, and then continues by stating how we can receive the gift of God’s righteousness.

Observations

Let’s examine Romans 5:17-19:

For, if by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.”

As our representative of the human race, when Adam sinned, God counted us guilty as well as Adam. This is “inherited sin”. Along with the legal guilt that God imputes to us because of Adam’s sin, we also inherit a sinful nature because of Adam’s sin. The moment that Adam sinned, he died spiritually. So also, we died spiritually.

Because of our inherited sinful nature, we have no ability to do spiritual good, or to even be in a relationship with God. Ephesians 2:3 says that by nature, we are objects of God’s wrath. Romans 8:8 says:

Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.”

The good news is that just as our sinful nature came through one man (Adam), our righteousness comes through one Man (Jesus Christ). When we accept Him as Lord over our life, and by faith, believe His blood cleanses us from sin, His righteousness is given to us. Our status changes from guilty to not guilty. Jesus fulfilled the law on our behalf. Through HIS obedience (not our own), we are made righteous.

Galatians 3:6 says:

Consider Abraham: ‘He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness’.”

James 2:23 reiterates this truth.

When we believe, by faith, righteousness is credited to us. It’s not of anything else but faith and belief.

Summary

  1. Because of Adam’s sin, we all are legally guilty before God.
  2. Because of Jesus, we can all be made legally righteous before God if we believe and accept Him as our personal Savior.
