Commentary on "Nutrition in the Bible"

PHIL HARRIS

Day 4: Tuesday, June 15, 2010 - Food in the New Testament

Overview

Today we delve into the meaning of Peter’s vision found in Acts chapter 10.

Observations

When we study the passage, Lev. 20:22-26, the key phrase from God is; “I am the LORD your God, who has separated you from the peoples. You shall therefore separate the clean beast from the unclean, and the unclean bird from the clean”. From this, we learn that their dietary laws concerning what is clean and unclean portrayed God’s intention that they be separated from the sins of the Gentile nations surrounding them.

In Eph. 2:11-16 we learn that Gentiles are no longer separated from God’s people because when Jesus fulfilled the requirements of the Old Covenant, the law was abolished with the introduction of the New Covenant:

by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, (Eph. 2:15 ESV)

When we read the following passage, we learn that those who to teach that Christians are to abstain from certain foods, are deceitful spirits teaching doctrines of demons:

Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer. (I Tim. 4:1-5 ESV)

Therefore when we read the account of Peter’s vision found in Acts chapter ten, God means exactly what he seems to mean when he says: "What God has made clean, do not call common".

Summary

  1. When Jesus Christ fulfilled the requirements of the Old Covenant, the Mosaic Law was abolished. Therefore Gentiles were no longer separated from God’s chosen people and the Hebrew dietary laws concerning what is clean and unclean were made null and void by the blood of Christ on the cross.
  2. We come full circle back to the command given to Noah found in Gen. 9:3-4; “Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you”.
