Commentary on "Faith and Healing"

RICHARD PEIFER

Day 7: Friday, May 7, 2010

Overview

(Three quotes from Ellen G. White)

Observations

What a way to ruin a perfectly good lesson. The author(s) have done a credible job of explaining the role of fear, stress, attitudes and emotions in health. They honestly discussed divine healing. All of this was done Biblically.

I took exception to their explanation of the role of faith, but only because I wanted them to go farther with it, to not leave key aspects of faith on the table.

So, why is the Bible never enough for Seventh-day Adventists? Rather than closing with a ringing endorsement of the Bible as the believers only rule of faith and practice, they trot out three EGW quotes. And the position and timing of the quotations is telling. They are offered as the capstone of the preceding discussions.

It’s as if the church is saying, “The Bible is fine as far as it goes, but Ellen is the proof of the pudding.”

Ellen White is not the Holy Spirit. She is but another flawed human, just like you and me. As long as the SDA church maintains their cultic approach to her they will find it impossible truly to present the risen Jesus as the all-sufficient Savior that He is. Instead, they will continually give people the mixed message of faith-works-grace-law-salvation-damnation that causes the very stressors so precisely described during the rest of the week.
