Commentary on "Redemption for Jew and Gentile"
Day 5: Wednesday, September 1, 2010 - "My People"
Ammi: “My People”
When writing to a church with both Jewish and Gentile members, such as the book of Romans, Paul often illustrates his gospel message that he received directly from Christ with events in the Old Testament. In Hosea God illustrates his love by having Hosea chose a wife of prostitution who had two children. “Ammi” represents wandering Israel, the other named “Loammi” meaning not my people. Both, in the end come to God. Thus, Israel who had been worshiping other Gods would be accepted back again. And those who were “not My people” (Gentiles) would come directly into favor with God.
I suggest that you ask the members of your Sabbath School class to wrestle with the core issues by asking the following questions. The answers will either confirm the truth of the Adventist message, or expose its errors.
1. Can we as Adventists, using only the writings of the Apostle to the Gentiles, present the Adventist message?
2. Should we as a church add things to gospel message that were not presented or required by the apostles?
3. If, today, people only had to accept Christ as Savior and Lord and were actually born again by the Holy Spirit Who would empower them live out the law of love, would that be sufficient for their salvation now and at the point of death and/or the second coming?
