Commentary on "More Clothing Imagery"
Day 1: Sabbath Afternoon, June 11, 2011 - Introduction
OVERVIEW
Today is a general preview of five biblical accounts of clothing that will be discussed in more detail throughout the coming week. The discussions will be in the context of how they relate to Jesus. The assigned reading is: Mark 5:24-34; Luke 8:43-48; John 13:1-16; 19:23, 24; Matt. 26:59-68; 27:27-29. The memory text for today is Mark 5:28: “For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.”
OBSERVATIONS
The reader is to read the assigned verses to prepare for the subsequent lessons. The five stories (in the author’s words) are:
- The woman who believed, rightly so, that all she had to do was touch his clothes, and she would be healed.
- Jesus, laying aside His garment in order to wash the feet of His disciples.
- The high priest who, standing before the Lord, rent his own garments in an act that sealed the haughty ruler’s doom.
- Jesus, in the garments of mockery prior to His crucifixion.
- The soldiers that cast lots for Christ’s garment, thus fulfilling an ancient prophecy.
CONCLUSIONS
There are no significant conclusions, as this is basically an introduction to the previously mentioned biblical stories.
