Commentary on "In the Shadow of His Wings"

COLLEEN TINKER

Day 1: Sabbath Afternoon, May 7, 2011 - Introduction

Overview

Today's lesson introduces a week of lessons on David and how his great sin resolved in finding forgiveness and covering in God’s love. The particular point of today’s lesson is looking at the biblical metaphor of an eagle--its power and majesty and grace. The authors said David turned to a similar metaphor to describe being sheltered under "the wings of God".

Observations

Quite honestly, I find the actual writing to be awkward and forced; I'm having trouble focussing on the content because the descriptions and metaphors are forced rather than natural. The opening paragraph about an eagle's dangerous power and strength, its characteristics of scavenging and thievery, its claws that must be "balled-up" in order "to keep from dicing up its young"--these things do not lead to the segue, "David himself turned to a similar image in his psalms about being sheltered under the wings of God."

David's psalms about finding shelter under God's wings do not evoke the violent, barely-contained force and strength of an eagle.

This lesson leaves me uncomfortable and unclear about the direction for the rest of the week. To be sure, David's psalms of finding refuge under God's wings are worth a week of meditation, but the emphasis on an eagle's destructive power juxtaposed with David's comfort fail to deliver the truth contained in David's psalms.

Summary

  1. David did write powerful psalms about finding refuge in God.
  2. The forced juxtaposition of descriptions of an eagle's violent power and force detracted from the point that David used a metaphor of "wings" to describe comfort from God.
