Day 5: Wednesday, May 25, 2011 - Change of Clothes

Zechariah 3:3: “Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the Angel.”

In the eyes of the people, Joshua the High Priest’s garments would have seemed to be very beautiful and ornate. His golden breastplate with the 12 precious and semi-precious stones would have gleamed in the sunlight. His garments may have seemed perfectly clean, but in the presence of the Lord, even his priestly robes became as filthy rags. Isaiah wrote,

“For all of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment.” Isaiah 64:6 NASU

Joshua’s garments were not only defiled by the wrong things he may have done or said, but even his personal goodness was not clean enough. The only way we can appear clean before God is for God, Himself, to take away our filthy robes and clothe us with the pure, clean robe of Jesus’ goodness. Isa 61:10:

“I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will exult in my God; For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.” NASU

What became of Joshua’s filthy robe? It was placed on another. On the cross, Jesus took all our sin upon Himself and died in our place. Jesus took our filthy garment and has given us His perfect, spotless robe of righteousness! 2 Corin-thians 5:21:

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” NASU
