Day 7: Friday, September 16, 2011 - Further Study
Overview
This lesson recommends further study through readings from Ellen White's Acts of the Apostles.
Observations
Ellen White's writings prove to be the source of the lesson's teaching that Paul was largely unsuccessful in his teaching at Mars Hill.
"In their pride of intellect and human wisdom may be found the reason why the gospel message met with comparatively little success among the Athenians." (AA240:1)
It was noted at the time of that lesson that Scripture doesn't give us sufficient details to state how successful Paul was or was not. What we are told in verses 32 and 33 is that "some" mocked him, "some" joined him, and "others" wanted to hear more. This doesn't sound much different, and perhaps a little better, than how the Jews responded to Paul when he taught the Gospel at the synagogues. The conclusions of the lesson are not based on Scripture alone, in fact these conclusions fly in the face of Scripture. Turning to Ellen White's writings we find the source for the teaching of the Sabbath School lesson. The source is Ellen White, not the Bible! Her teachings that add to, and even contradict, Scripture are added directly into the lesson discussion and stated as un-sourced facts. Those studying the Sabbath School lesson are slowly but surely indoctrinated into her teachings without even realizing it.
