Commentary on "Worship in the Psalms"
PHIL HARRIS
Day 7: Friday, August 12, 2011 - Further Study
Overview
The quarterly lesson suggests that we read these Ellen White references:
- “The Creation,” pp. 44–51, in Patriarchs and Prophets
- “Poetry and Song,” pp. 159–168, in Education
- “Forgetfulness,” pp. 107–115, in Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8
Observations
These quotes were extracted from a small portion of the suggested reading:
- Speaking of the newly created earth Ellen says; “Its surface was diversified with mountains, hills, and plains, interspersed with noble rivers and lovely lakes”. The bible gives us no such information.
- She said; “Adam was "the son of God."” The bible clearly states that only Jesus Christ is called the ‘Son of God’.
- In referring to Adam before he had sinned, she says he was “He was holy”. She also refers to Adam and Eve as “the holy pair”. While Adam was certainly created in the image of God, the bible does not describe either of them as being ‘holy’.
- Speaking of the creation of Adam and Eve she says that “they were clothed with a covering of light and glory”. In actual fact, what the bible does say is that they were created naked but knew no shame until they had sinned.
- In speaking of the tree they were forbidden to eat the fruit of she says “Its fruit appeared like apples of gold and silver”. The bible provides no such information.
- Speaking of the seventh day of the creation week she says “following the example of the Creator, man was to rest upon this sacred day”. The bible says no such thing. To begin with, God did not return to a work of creation at the end of the first week of earth’s history. When God declared his rest as holy he was speaking of a completed creation, meaning he had ceased from the work of creation. Not until we learn that Jesus is our Sabbath Rest do we have reason to understand why God called this day of the creation week as holy. Furthermore, not until God gave the Hebrew people this day as a day of rest as a sign of his covenant with them was there ever any mention of the Sabbath Day as being a requirement for any member of the human race.
Summary
- The writings of Ellen White clearly go beyond the revealed word of God as provided for us in the bible. These quotations include many contradictions with what holy inspired scriptures teach.
- In matters pertaining to your salvation and where you will spend your eternity, which would you rather turn to for the foundation for your faith? Which will it be, the known holy inspired word of God that has been the foundation of the Christian faith for the better part of two thousand years or the questionable flawed writings of Ellen White?
