Day 2: Sunday, February 12, 2012 - The Sabbath in Genesis

Overview

There is a very different manner in which this same passage can be understood, a manner which is more consistent with the New Testament descriptions of the Sabbath, particularly Hebrews 4.

The seventh day was special and blessed. All of the other days were defined by a beginning and an end, for instance:

God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day (Gen 1:31).

But the seventh day is not described as having any end. Why? Because God had finished His creation. God did not start creating again on the 8th day and keep creating until another rest on the 14th day. God ceased creating. The word for stopping or ceasing is the same root word as Sabbath in Hebrew. The plan for the Garden of Eden was that mankind would be in continual fellowship with God. Sin broke that plan. The cross restored that fellowship/rest.

Observations

The lesson concludes that the weekly Sabbath was instituted at creation and was followed every remaining week through history. But there is no record in the Bible of any human ever resting on the 7th day of the week prior to the Exodus from Egypt.
