Commentary on "Lord of the Sabbath"
Day 6: Thursday, February 16, 2012 - Jesus and His Sabbath: Part 2
Overview
The lesson continues to separate the God of the OT from the God of the NT. Despite the fact that God gave specific rules about the Sabbath, the lesson claims:
"For Jesus, the Sabbath was more about people than about rules".
If this was true of Jesus when He walked incarnate among us, wouldn't it have also been true of Jesus when the Sabbath laws of the OT were given?
Observations
SDAs make a big deal of Jesus in the grave. While none of the Gospel accounts refer to Jesus having a "Sabbath rest" in the grave, and none of the NT authors make this comparison, this claim is core to the SDA doctrine of the Sabbath. If you read each of the Gospel accounts of this event, none even mention Jesus "resting" in the grave. This is a case of SDAs reading what they want to see into the passage.
There is even some indication that Jesus didn't "rest" while He was in the grave.
For Christ also suffered[ once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water (1 Pet 3:18).
