Commentary on "Let the Church Know"

CHERYL GRANGER

Day 3: Monday, June 11, 2012 - "What God Had Done"

In today's study, the words "What God Had Done", are found in Acts 20:19 when Paul was relating to James and the elders what God had done for the Gentiles through his ministry. He had just arrived in Jerusalem the day before and had been received "warmly" (NIV) and "gladly" (ESV) by the brothers.

As Warren Wiersbe states in his NT Bible Commentary, "Paul gave a full and accurate account, not of what HE had done, but of what the Lord had done through his ministry." In 1 Cor. 15:10b Paul again gives God the credit: "On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them--though it was not I, but the grace of God that was with me."

The author mentions "indications of division (Acts 21: 20b-22)". (The leaders brought up their concern that rumors regarding Paul might cause problems among the Jewish believers that were "zealous for the law". They told Paul to go participate, with four other men, in a Nazarite ceremony at the temple to smooth things over. It didn't work. A mob dragged Paul from the temple and he ended up a prisoner) This is an interesting study, but off the topic of "reporting".

The author states that communication from leaders to members re SDA church activities are needed to ensure interest in these activities by the members. He says that "in many churches...only those involved in each ministry know what is happening there." In my experience, when people have been born again of the Holy Spirit, they don't need lessons telling them they should communicate with one another about their witnessing for Jesus.

The lesson ends with a long quote from The Acts of the Apostles.

Today's lesson statistics:

SOURCE OF POWER FOR SUCCESSFUL WITNESSING AND CHURCH GROWTH

REPORTING: MENTIONED FIVE TIMES

RELYING ON THE HOLY SPIRIT: NOT MENTIONED
