Commentary on "Spiritual Gifts for Evangelism and Witnessing"
Day 6: Thursday, April 19, 2012 - Gifts and Christian Responsibility
Overview
Today’s lesson examines how to use one’s spiritual gifts responsibly as members of the [Adventist] body. It summarizes the day’s comments thus: “When we have committed ourselves to the service of Christ, we can expect great things to happen as the Holy Spirit is poured out upon us. The key is for us, as individuals and as a church, to be ready to receive that which the Spirit gives.”
Overview
Once again, the foundational premise misses the mark. The lesson is addressing Adventist congregations which do not teach the pure gospel of Scripture not the biblical Trinity and salvation by Christ alone without any added requirements. When one has a false gospel, one will not have the gifts of the Spirit.
The Spirit absolutely does lead people “away from the body”, contrary to the lesson’s claim in its penultimate paragraph. If “the body” is an organization that teaches what Paul calls “another gospel”, the Holy Spirit will definitely lead people toward Jesus and away from the counterfeit.
Refer again to yesterday’s lesson for more insight on what the church is, how it functions, and how we receive and function in the gifts of the Spirit.
Summary

- When one is committed to a false gospel, he will not receive gifts of the Spirit.
- When one places his trust in Jesus alone, the Holy Spirit indwells and empowers him.
