Commentary on "The Water of Life"

PHIL HARRIS

Day 1: Sabbath Afternoon, April 17, 2010

Overview

It is common knowledge that water is foundational to all life and has a multitude of uses or functions that make life possible. When Jesus spoke to the woman at the well in John 4:1-26, he introduced a spiritual concept of water that is centered on his role as Messiah, the Savior.

Observations

Starting at the beginning of the gospel of John, we learn that Jesus, our Savior, is also our Creator. As the Creator of the universe and all life on earth, he is truly our ‘Water of Life’, whether you are looking at the physical or spiritual qualities of water.

Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (John 4:13-14 ESV)
