Commentary on "Worship and Song and Praise"

RICHARD PEIFER

Day 2: Sunday, July 31, 2011 - Between Saul and David

Overview

“Ask yourself, how does what goes on inside your heart differ from what people see of you on the outside? What does your answer say to you about yourself?” [Teacher’s Quarterly, Page 66]

Problems

Is this the recipe for worship? I hope not.

Are we surprised when we look inside and see sin? I hope not. It is possible that some are completely deluded regarding their sinfulness, but this is a delusion of the lost not the saved.

The point being made in this lesson (and fleshed out more fully in Monday’s section) is that true worship is motivated by the realization of sin, which sin is then properly repented of and forgiven. How sad! I don’t know about you, but the last thing that motivates me to worship is a sense of sin, forgiven or not.

What motivates me to worship is life, the very power of the Holy Spirit within me telling me that I am a child of God, telling me that nothing can or will separate me from the love of God in Christ.

Do I still fail? Yes. Am I a forgiven person? Yes! Does my sin have any impact on my relationship with Jesus? Absolutely no! (But more on this in Monday’s section.)

The lesson comes close to explaining the difference between Saul and David. It boils down to a simple fact. Saul rarely walked by faith, and never when the chips were down. David almost always walked by faith, and especially so when the chips were down.

Summary

  1. Sunday’s lesson uses the contrast between Saul and David to set up Monday’s lesson regarding contrition.
  2. I do not believe that contrition leads to worship. Contrition may lead to repentance, but worship is the result of salvation, not repentance.
