Day 6: Thursday, October 27, 2011 - Redeemed From a Curse

Overview

The theme for today is centered on this verse:

For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” (Gal 3:10 ESV)

Observations

Once again the quarterly lesson uses terminology that appears to agree totally with orthodox biblical teaching on the subject of our salvation. The words of Paul in the theme verse clearly say that anyone who does not perfectly abide by the “Book of the Law” is under a curse. Since none are righteous because all have sinned, all those under the law plus anyone who attempts to place themselves under the law are under a curse for having failed to do so.

Paul is clearly referring to all of the Mosaic Law by calling it the “Book of the Law” in this verse. Since this would include much of what Adventist theology claims to be valid requirements for those who would be obedient to God including the food and health statutes that form the framework for the ‘health message which Adventist claim to be the ‘right hand of the gospel’, there is a major misunderstanding of the meaning of scripture and the gospel message in particular.

Summary

  1. Since Paul declares that all who would place themselves under the law are under its curse and since Adventist willfully place themselves under portions of this law, are not Adventist under that curse for attempting to do so and failing?
  2. Whether or not it is intentional, there is either a misunderstanding of what Paul is teaching here in the epistle of Galatians or the author of this quarterly lesson is admitting that Adventist theology is wrong. Two opposites cannot both be true.
  3. Is not this the very real danger Paul is cautioning us against when he speaks of ‘another gospel’ which is no gospel at all? Either you receive the grace of God through faith alone or you don’t. What stands alone cannot be added to.
