Commentary on "Old Testament Faith"

PHIL HARRIS

Day 7: Friday, October 28, 2011 - Further Study

Overview

Today we will skip past and ignore the quote from The Desire of Ages by Ellen White.

Observations

One point that should to be expanded upon before we end this commentary is that we both sin and are born with a sin nature. That is, we sin because it is our nature to do so.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. (Psalms 51:1-7 ESV)

King David is referring to his sin nature when he speaks of having been “brought forth in iniquity”. When he speaks of being “whiter than snow” he is speaking of much more than just his sins that are covered but his very nature that underlies the reason he is a sinner. We are sinners before birth and before we actually sin.

Since the quarterly lesson summary does reflect Paul’s message if we retain the biblical definition of the words used by him in the epistle to the churches in the Province of Galatia we can end this commentary by quoting it.

Quarterly Lesson Summary

"From start to finish in the Christian life, the basis of our salvation is faith in Christ alone. It was because of Abraham’s faith in God’s promises that he was counted as righteous, and that same gift of righteousness is available for anyone today who shares Abraham’s faith. The only reason we are not condemned for our mistakes is that Jesus paid the price for our sins by dying in our place." (Adult Sabbath School Bible Study Guide, Oct-Nov-Dec 2011)
