Commentary on "The God of Grace and Judgment"
Day 6: Thursday, January 26, 2012 - The Hour of His Judgment
Overview
Today the lesson returns to a solid Biblical foundation.
"Without grace, we'd all be consumed by God's justice. Our only hope, then, standing before a just God, is grace."
What a great way to wrap up this lesson. We cannot minimize God's holiness. We cannot circumvent His justice. We can only rely upon His grace. A grace that comes by faith, apart from works of the Law.
Observations
Today's lesson talks about the importance of grace, and our inability to stand before God without this free gift. The lesson does a great job of explaining this point. And it concludes by emphasizing that the message that SDAism proclaims "has the 'everlasting gospel' as its foundation".
What is the 'everlasting gospel' that SDAism proclaims? Is it the Gospel of Christ and Him crucified, the Gospel that Christ died in our place that we may be judged according to His righteousness rather than our own? Or is it another gospel? Is it a gospel that slips our works in the back door by adding a "but" to this everlasting gospel. What kind of "buts" have you added to the simple Gospel?
Salvation is free, but:
- you have to keep the Sabbath;
- you have to confess and repent of each sin to have it forgiven;
- you have to show by how you live your life that you really were sorry for the sins you confessed;
- you have to cleanse yourself from all unrighteousness;
- you have to eat the right foods; or,
- you have to associate with the right people?
