Commentary on "God as Redeemer"

ANE EDWARDS

Day 4: Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - Salvation in Isaiah

OVERVIEW

Today's lesson again teaches how Christ's death paid our penalty for sin and it reaffirms the great truth that our works cannot in any way make us right with God. The lesson even acknowledges the fact that, "Had our works been able to make us right with God in any way, then Jesus would not have had to die for us. The fact that He did, that it took nothing less than His death in order to make atonement, should be all the proof we need that we cannot earn our salvation. It is, instead, wholly a gift of grace."

OBSERVATIONS

While I personally believe that overview to be a correct understanding of the Gospel, I cannot reconcile it with chapter 28 of the "Great Controversy," which teaches, that the Investigative Judgement is a second phase to Christ's atonement, and that is “as essential to the plan of salvation as was His death upon the cross.”

In this second phase of atonement the works of everyone who has ever professed to be a Christian is judged for salvation. If my works cannot in any make me right with God as the lesson teaches, then why would they need to be judged in order to determine my salvation?

The book of Hebrews teaches Christ's work of atonement was completed at the cross. It goes on to say that He will never take up His work of atonement ever again.

To teach that there is a second phase of atonement, that is "as essential" as what Christ did on the cross, again robs the Gospel of a powerful truth, that it is finished!
